“The First Chapter of the book of Aristotle the Philosopher, called in Greek Theologia, being the
discourse on the Divine Sovereignty; the interpretation of Porphyry of Tyre, translated into Arabic
by ʽAbd al-Masīḥ ibn Nāʽima of Emesa and corrected for Aḥmad ibn al-Muʽtaṣim billāh by Abū Yūsuf
Yaʽqūb ibn Isḥāq al-Kindī” (trans. Lewis).
So begins one of the most baffling texts of Arabic philosophical literature.
The
ERC project Ideas, Advanced Grant 249431 supported by the
European Research Council will produce the critical edition
of the pseudo-Theology of Aristotle. The edition will be accompanied by translation, running
commentary, and bilingual indexes (Greek-Arabic and Arabic-Greek).
